Longtime California Manufacturer Asks Students to tap their Innovative Side with New Scholarship

EL MONTE, Calif., Feb. 17, 2011—Miller Dial, LLC, a manufacturing and engineering company based in Southern California since 1937, and the El Monte Union High School District (EMUHSD) today announced the Miller Dial Young Innovator Scholarship. Open to seniors in all six of the District’s high schools, the Scholarship aims to support the advancement of students who possess the same innovative spirit and determination that has defined Miller Dial and residents of the community it has been a part of for over seven decades.

“Much of Miller Dial’s success during the past 74 years has been made possible by the talented workforce of El Monte and surrounding communities,” said Jim Kaldem, President of Miller Dial. “The Miller Dial Young Innovator Scholarship is a way to express our gratitude to the community and support the next generation of innovative thinkers here in Southern California.”

“We are extremely appreciative of Miller Dial’s support and commitment to our students via this scholarship and look forward to a very positive and longstanding relationship,” commented EMUHSD Superintendent, Nick Salerno. “I encourage every one of our seniors to take advantage of this wonderful opportunity and apply.”

The Miller Dial Young Innovator Scholarship will be awarded based on a student’s ability to either create a project that demonstrates innovation in the area of sustainability and environmental improvement or create a community service project that addresses an issue important to them. Applicants will also be required to compose an essay describing the role innovation and their community has played in their development as a student. Congresswoman Judy Chu, who spent over 20 years as an educator before being elected to Congress, will be on hand at Miller Dial on May 7 to present the scholarship to the winning students.

Applications will be available at all EMUHSD high schools (Arroyo, El Monte, Mountain View, Rosemead, South El Monte and Fernando R. Ledesma), or online. Applications must be received by Miller Dial no later than April 15, 2011, and recipients must be able to accept the scholarship in person at Miller Dial on May 7, 2011.
